BACHELOR OF COUNSELLING WITH HONOURS

The Bachelor of Counselling (Hons.) aims to produce counsellors who are capable of providing the best counselling services to community members in need, including individuals, groups, couples, families, mentor and more. The Bachelor of Counselling program is the cornerstone of developing competent counsellors. The program is designed in accordance with the requirements of the Counsellors Act 1988. A competent counsellor is defined as a counsellor who meets the requirements of professional counselling training as prescribed by the Malaysian Board of Counsellors (LKM). This healthy development is in line with the government’s efforts to increase the number of trained counsellors as gazetted in the Counsellors Act 1998.

Coursework

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROGRAM

STPM 

1) Obtain at least Grade B – (NGMP 2.67) at STPM level in any two (2) of the following subjects:
• English Language / Literature in English
• Chinese/ Tamil/ Arabic • Shariah/ Usuluddin • History
• Geography • Economics • Business Studies • Accounting • Sports Science

2) Obtain at least Grade C (NGMP 2.00) at STPM level in the following subjects:
• Mathematics (M) or obtained at least honors (Grade C) at SPM level in the subject Mathematics

3) at least pass (Grade E) at SPM level in the subject English

4) pass the prescribed psychometric tests and interviews

MATRICULATION 

1) Obtain at least Grade B – (2.67) at the matriculation / foundation level in any of the following two (2) subjects:-
• Mathematics • Physics  • Economics • Accounting • Business and management

2) obtained at least honours (Grade C) at SPM level in the following subjects:
* Mathematics and

3) at least pass (Grade E) at SPM level in the subject English

4) pass the prescribed psychometric tests and interviews

DIPLOMA / EQUIVALENT LEAVERS AND NON-CURRENT YEAR STPM/MATRICULATION LEAVERS 

A) for Diploma/equivalent candidates, obtain a minimum CGPA/ CGPA of 2.70 and meet articles 2,3 and 4 below.

B) for candidates who graduated from STPM / Matriculation instead of the current year:

1) Obtain at least Grade B – (2.67) in any of the following two (2) subjects:
• Bahasa Malaysia / Malay literature / Literature in English • Chinese / Tamil/ Arabic • Shariah / Usuluddin • History • Geography • Mathematics • Economics • Business Studies / Business Management • Accounting • Sports Science

2) Obtain at least Grade C (2.00) at STPM level in any one (1) subject  Mathematics S / Mathematics (M) or obtained at least honours (Grade C) at SPM level in the subject Mathematics

3) at least pass (Grade E) at SPM level in the English subject

4) pass the prescribed psychometric tests and interviews

The program emphasizes counselling skills in individual and group sessions. The mastery of effective counselling skills enables the counsellor to perform better counselling services and thus provide a therapeutic effect to clients. The counselling service offered by the counsellor is based on the ethical principles of supporting services.
