Dr. Safwan is an Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia and Research Associate at the Victoria Institute of Strategic Economic Studies (VISES), Victoria University, Australia. His industrial and professional experiences include roles as Director (Non-Executive) and Financial Planner of a finance company licensed by Bank Negara Malaysia and Securities Commission Malaysia, licensed dealer in Bursa Malaysia and Board Member (Certification and CPD) of the Malaysia Financial Planning Council (MFPC). He was appointed Speaker at the reputable InvestSmart® and Shariah Financial Planning workshop.
Dr. Safwan holds a PhD in Finance from Victoria University, Australia under the supervision of Professor Dr. Terrence Hallahan, Master of Financial Analysis (CFA Program Partner) from La Trobe University, Australia, BA (Honours) in Accounting and Financial Studies from the University of Central Lancashire, United Kingdom, and Diploma in Accountancy from UiTM, Malaysia. He is a Registered Financial Planner and member of the MFPC, as well as a Certified Finance and Treasury Professional with the Finance and Treasury Association, Australia. As a practitioner, he held Capital Market Services Representative license with Securities Commission Malaysia in addition to Unit Trust (Mutual Fund) and Private Retirement Scheme licenses with the Federation of Investment Managers Malaysia.
Bringing together experiences as a practitioner, educator and researcher in the fields of finance and investment, he is currently supervising a number of PhD and MSc students at UMT and he has successfully supervised doctorate and master students to completion. As well, he has been appointed as External Expert for PhD candidature in financial optimization at VISES, Australia.
His main research interests lie in the areas of investment strategies, market efficiency, computational finance, portfolio diversification and financial optimization. His research papers have been presented at international conferences and seminars in several countries including Australia, China, Romania and Thailand besides publications in ISI Web of Science® and Scopus indexed journals such as Economic Modelling, International Review of Economics and Finance, Investment Management and Financial Innovations, and Physica A. He also received Best Paper Awards for his research papers in econophysics and investment.
Based on his academic and professional qualifications, industry experience and research excellence, Dr. Safwan has been awarded the RHB Islamic Endowed Scholar in Finance position, sponsored by RHB Islamic Bank Berhad. This prestigious award is the first ever industry-sponsored endowment position at the University of Malaysia Terengganu.
